Easy homemade cinnamon crockpot applesauce. It just takes four ingredients to make this delicious treat that’s healthier and tastier than the store bought version.
Applesauce was one of my favorite childhood snacks. I still like eating those little cups of applesauce as an adult. But by far, homemade applesauce is much better than the kind from the grocery store!
Growing up, my mom would make applesauce and serve it with those flaky Pillsbury biscuits that have a bunch of layers. I would sit at the kitchen table and happily pull apart every layer of my biscuit, then use each piece to scoop up the warm chunky applesauce so I could pretend I was eating a bunch of mini apple pies. It was so good😋
If you have never tried biscuits and applesauce together, please treat yourself to some ASAP! You can use this easy cinnamon crockpot applesauce recipe to do it. It’s not my mom’s recipe, but it is a tasty one.
You only need four simple ingredients and there is no added sugar. Just put all the ingredients in the crockpot and it does the work for you. It’s a wholesome treat for breakfast or snack time, plus it makes your house smell delicious while it cooks.
- Apples (I use Gala, but you can use another variety of sweet apple)
- Cinnamon
- Lemon Juice (fresh or from concentrate)
- Water
How to make Cinnamon Crockpot Applesauce:
1. Wash, peel, core, and slice your apples – about 8 slices per apple. I always use Gala apples. They are relatively inexpensive and they are sweet enough that you don’t need to add sugar. I tried the recipe with Red Delicious in the past, but it didn’t turn out as well. So preferably pick an apple sweeter than that! Also, if you happen to have any mushy apples, making applesauce is a good way to use them up. Just make sure to cut out any bad spots before you cook them.
2. Add the apple slices to the crockpot, then add the ground cinnamon, lemon juice and water. You can use fresh or from concentrate lemon juice. I use from concentrate because it’s easier and I usually have it on hand.
3. Cover the crockpot and cook on high for about 3 hours, or until the apples are soft enough to mash easily. Make sure to stir the apples once halfway through the cooking time.
4. Use a potato masher to mash apples to desired consistency. The applesauce will be a little chunky. If you want smoother applesauce, you can use an immersion blender instead of a potato masher. Be careful, because the apples will be hot!
5. Enjoy your easy homemade cinnamon applesauce warm or cold. Personally I think the flavor gets better as it cools down. We like to eat it at room temperature on a biscuit, toast, or sweet roll. This recipe makes around 3 cups of applesauce.
